:De Doelen opened in May 1966 in the heavily-bombed centre of Rotterdam. Its ground-breaking functionalist design was by Herman and Evert Kraaijvanger: the acoustics of the 2,100 seat Grote Zaal (Great Hall) were widely praised. A smaller concert hall, the Jurriaanse Zaal, seats 465. In 2000, a new conference wing - the Willem Burger complex -was added, designed by Ector Hoogstad Architecten as a light steel structure placed on the roof of the existing foyer. In 2007-09, Kraaijvanger renovated the original 1960s building, incorporating intelligent lighting throughout, and making dramatic use of colour in the Grote Zaal (purple seat fabric accented by gold-coloured balconies against wood panelling) and the Port of Rotterdam foyer (rich red soffits, white walls and deep purple carpeting).
