|:||K2S's innovative design for Kamppi Chapel provides a space for silence in the perhaps the busiest square in Finland, Narinkkatori in Helsinki. No church services are held in the Chapel: rather, it is place for quiet contemplation and prayer, and a centre for work in the community. It is a remarkable example of timber craftsmanship, and gained the Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award 2010 before it even opened. The main chapel, 11.5 metres high, is entirely lined in curved alder strips, with simple furniture in ash. Light filters softly through a screened skylight at the apex of the ceiling. The exterior is formed of curved spruce strips, treated with special wax, resting on a frame of massive glulam beams.|
