:MahaNakhon is a mixed-use development providing residences, retail, hotel and an observatory in the heart of Bangkok. Located in the Silom business district, directly adjacent to the Bangkok Skytrain and Bus Rapid Transport System, MahaNakhon is Thailand’s second tallest building. With its distinctive sculptural appearance, MahaNakhon has been carefully carved to introduce a three-dimensional ribbon of architectural ‘pixels’ that circle the tower’s full height, as if excavating portions of the elegant glass curtain wall to reveal the inner life of the building – metaphorically and actually an architecture that encloses and protects its inhabitants while revealing the inner life of their city. The pixilation gives MahaNakhon an arresting profile on the skyline while generating a set of very special features to house the diverse functions of the building complex in an intelligently strategic way. The inner city site is irregularly shaped, resulting in a three building program, the main 314m tower, a smaller retail building at the front of the site and an automated parking tower positioned towards the back. The form of the tower has a distinctive sculptural appearance which takes advantage of the tropical climate and views. The three dimensional ribbon of architectural pixels cut away the façade of the tower to reveal the inner core, creating unique one of a kind residence. Ole Scheeren previously worked at OMA.
