:This 16 metre inclined obelisk is made of Portland stone and sitting on an angle of 19.5 degrees, it was designed by Eric Parry Architects as part of the Southwark Gateway Project which also included the creation of a new tourist information centre. It is a marker. "Tilted at 19.5 degrees to point down to a specific spot. Follow the trajectory of the needle downwards and it points to the riverside opposite the City church St Magus the Martyr. This is where the medieval London Bridge crossed the river. After the terror attack on London Bridge in June 2017, the needle was a focal point for tributes to the victims and was a temporary memorial to the 8 people who died in the attack. It won a Natural Stone Craftsmanship Award 2000.
