|:||The Urban Institute occupies the low-lying, scrappy edge of a haphazard collection of 19th century Masonic school buildings, loosely organized around a tree-lined quadrangle. Engaging with the bulk of the Memorial Hall, the building is sited so as to form a new, independent entrance to the Richview Campus and to facilitate the required connection to the listed, red brick Richview Library. A finger of landscaped space - with a canopy, a low wall and a seat - extends to mark the arrival space. The building consists of two layers that combine to form a spatial tartan grid. The two-storey 'ground' layer is stratified in the east-west direction, establishing layers of privacy - between the environmental laboratory and private research carels, for example. The 'sky' layer of rooflights works in the opposite, north-south direction, visually and volumetrically stitching the spaces together again and gently subverting the zoning requirements inherent in the brief.
