:The expansion plans of University College Limerick included development of sites on opposing sides of a major tributary of the Shannon River. Connecting these sites was obviously a major priority. Arup Consulting Engineers, working with Murray O’Laoire Architects, developed an exciting scheme for a dual road and pedestrian walkway. The tributary is a route to an important salmon spawning ground: a fact that not only imposed important constraints on light pollution and light spillage over the sides of the bridge, but inspired Arup and Murray O’Laoire to design the bridge support columns representing a fish tail rising from the water, morphing into columns used to carry the bridge lighting. Wink worked with the project team to detail the lighting poles to meet this design concept. The poles were to be manufactured from polished stainless steel, rising seamlessly from the support columns rising through the gap between the road and pedestrian bridges.
